Memoirs of a Sessa

First week in China

I have enjoyed my first week in Changsha.  I had trouble sleeping the first few days.  I just felt like I was lying in bed with my eyes closed.  But I am fine now, and feel more comfortable.  I thought my apartment would be very small, but it is actually very big.  It was really hot when I first got here, but has been nice the past couple of days.  I think it will become warm again before it starts getting cold.  Hopefully I will be prepared for the winter, being from Ohio.  Even though it doesn’t get very cold, it may still be difficult because heating is not usually used.  Changsha University has a fairly big and beautiful campus.  There is a lot of trees and wildlife.  Walking through many parts of the campus is like walking through a park.  There are some places to go near campus, if I feel like going somewhere but don’t want to ride the bus.  If I take the bus downtown, it will take almost one hour, but it is worth going from time to time.  Downtown Changsha is just like a really nice city in America.  It is still different but everything is relatively new so it looks nice.  The Chinese Walmart is actually kind of cool.  The first restaurant I ate at in downtown, was already the best chinese food I have ever had.  The food on campus is still good and they have a large selection.  But the food in the restaurants is much better.  And I don’t expect the first restaurant to be the best I have had for very long.  I think I will try KFC soon, because it is much different than America’s.  I also tried bubble tea, which was great.  It tasted almost the same, I only got milk tea, but the tapioca had some red bean flavor which made it really good.  It feels strange being a foreigner.  Maybe more than I expected.  Some people will stare at me.  It’s usually not bad though, because they don’t want to be rude.  They just notice me and want to take a look.  The kids are really cute though.  Maybe some of them don’t even know people like me exist …  Foreigners being in downtown is a little common, but the area I am in is not as common.  So I think some people are just surprised to see me.
